Patient Profile
L.C. is a 58-year-old Native American man from a Pueblo tribe in northern New Mexico. L.C.’s wife and family drove 50 miles to take him to the Indian Health Service hospital. He comes into the emergency department (ED) doubled over in pain. He is grimacing and holding his abdomen with both arms. You are working as the triage nurse that morning.
As you read through this chapter, think about L.C.’s symptoms with the following questions in mind:
1. What are the possible causes for L.C.’s acute abdominal pain
2. What would be your priority assessment
3. What questions would you ask L.C.
4. What should be included in the physical assessment What would you be looking for
5. What diagnostic studies might you expect to be ordered
